I’ve gotten this particular question from so many singers………..
“why do I go offkey when backing up”, “why can’t I sing on a key given to me”?

Then this post is for you.

This is known as tone DEAFNESS of or key DEAFNESS. And truly truly, this is a very common incidence among singers. One thing that makes you a great singer is being able to sing on any chord given to you. Although you may have convenient keys but music requires the ability to navigate.

Well, I’m going to give you 5 causes and ways to deal with this.

1. • Listen
I don’t just understand why most singers don’t know how to listen. Whatever you listen makes a huge impact. Lack of listening and just jumping into a song without getting the key is the reason for tone DEAFNESS in 3/5 people. Even grounded singers try to listen to what the keyboardist is playing to follow suit. That said, the first way to stop singing offkey is to make your ears your number 1 weapon.

2. Use an earpiece
I’ve experimented each and every tip here both for myself and people I train. That little wire thing with ear pads can help you a lot if you can harness its power. Try listening to songs with an earpiece and sing along. Sing on your part.
My strategy: Use the two ears first to get the instrumentals and progression of the song perfectly, sing along. Afterwards, use one ear of the earpiece so you can hear yourself and track your errors.

3. Confidence:
I’ve seen really good singers sing offkey on stage not because they can’t sing well but because of over-nervousness. It’s alright to be nervous but don’t let that control you on stage. Tell yourself “I can do it” and get up there. If you’re shaky with sweaty palms, you get easily disoriented. While working on your voice, work on your self esteem o…Don’t be overconfident or feel superior than everyone but don’t fail in your mind already before getting on stage.

4. Karaoke
Gbam! This works for everybody. Even I do this a lot. You can download karoake apps or download a karaoke mp3 from Google. Doing this makes you more flexible. What’s more! It’s actually fun because you feel like you’re the artist yourself……..

5. Teamwork
To grow, you may often need people to help you. Someone asked me “Amb. Success, how do I sing on key and not offkey?’ the first question I asked her was “do you have a music leader?. She said “yes, but I’m on a low-key so I hardly try to make myself heard during choir rehearsal”. How will you grow when even the person leading you do not know your shortcomings. I had people like this in my choir, they want to be silent, nobody should hear my offkey! But that’s wrong, when I realized this as a leader, I knew I had to work. Now, I know the areas each and every one of my choir members need to grow- it makes it easier to tackle our problerms. Sing with people, be open to your leader. Allow people to put you through. When you sing with people apart from stage performance or ministration, believe or not, you grow. .

Like what I said when I taught on the WhatsApp group…”you must be very intentional about your development to truly grow”. So let’s get started. Keep trying….. You can do it.

HOW I SKYROCKETED MUSICALLY…
This is my own story…I’ve always loved music since I was little but no one ever gave me the chance then…
In the children choir, they would always sideline me..no one ever wanted to listen…

Then I backed out and trained alone…on my own…in my room…Years later, I joined a teen choir and gave my best…

I had this challenge of always sounding hoarse whenever I wanted to pitch…that was my biggest challenge…my voice would crack whenever I pitched…it was so annoying..so I concluded I was naturally a hoarse singer…I tried bananas, eggs, honey and lemon etc..they didn’t work…I had such a wonderful voice but I had a challenge pitching…

Until I made a decision to improve…I joined a band, a big band, I rehearsed like there was no tomorrow…I found myself scaling even more than my MD…and that was it…

The next thing…I could pitch on almost any key…it was a breakthrough…

Here’s what i learnt
1. Never give up so easily
2. Sometimes all you need is to leave your comfort zone…
3. Keep practicing
4. You can do it…
5. Your voice will never come out if you keep it in
6. There’s always something better than best
7. Do not look down on people…
Anyone can sing just fine…all they need is to WORK

To anyone on this family who feels like no one is listening to you, you’re singing offkey, you can’t pitch etc…I felt that once…now people don’t even believe when they hear me sing…make a deliberate decision to work on yourself and tell God to lead you…
You + God = Unstoppable
